International travel: Government websites you want to visit.

Your passport to government travel information websites.

At a time in our history when we have changes in passport requirements, diseases, terrorist situations and safety requirements, it is important for any traveler to be as diligent as they can so you can enjoy your vacations safely.

Here are some top government websites that will give you a breakdown of the travel environment and tips for travel to countries around the world.

U.S. Department of State on Diplomacy

Great background info on countries around the world including historical, populations, languages, travel, weather, etc.

U.S. Embassy

Here is a list of all the U.S. embassy's in other countries.  It is good to be familiar with where you can go for support if you need it while in another country.  Just jot down their contact information and keep it with you.

U.S. Department of State on Travel

This site helps you get your passport, up-to-date info on US travel warnings and alerts (i.e. Swine Flu in Mexico, terrorists threats in Yemen, etc...)  You can sign up for RSS feeds if you travel frequently out of the country and wish to stay on top of this type of info.  There are also links here on how to register with the local US embassy for your destination so in an emergency they know you are there and can help evacuate you if necessary (i.e. if the country gets hit with a tidal wave and they know you are there they will look for you and help you get out).  And there is a great little tips section on traveling abroad.

CIA's Library

The CIA's compilation of data on the countries around the world.  Similar to some other government websites but with more statistical information.  This may be a more interesting site for stats or helpful for business travel.

Transportation Security Administration

Great site to assist you with travel issues related to carry-on's, luggage locks, traveling with children, wait times and more.

Centers for Disease Control

Here you will not only find immunization schedules but a basic question and answer forum, specific info for travelers and guidelines.

World Health Organization

You can get information on health risks for travelers, interactive maps and health topics related to countries.
