Travel planning with the library - yes, you read that right.

Online library resources that will get you there - pleasantly.

Read between the lines guys!  I wouldn't have thought of the library as my first online resource for travel.  I usually think of getting in the car, driving down to a local library, hunting through files...Or, asking the librarians what I feel like are dumb questions because I think I should have found what I was looking for already.

Well, don't hesitate to use the Dallas Public Library.  Out of all the public services out there, the library has spent an amazing amount of time and effort keeping up with the times.  The computer and online resources are extremely helpful and evolving.  Here are some great ways to utilize the Dallas Public Library's online resources:

Reserving travel books, DVD's or movies

Go to the Dallas Public Library's main website.  In the search box on the right hand side, type in 'TRAVEL' and click on the 'keyword' button.  Here you can see what travel books are available and reserve them.  AND, you can also get travel DVD's and movies.  (Check those links out on the right hand side of the page).

Finding public library hosted events around Dallas

I had you skip the main page in the search but go back to it now.  In the large display window where images are moving, there are great ideas on where to travel around Dallas to see unique events.  But you can also check under the 'events' tab at the top of the page.

On the road

- Audiobooks.  While you travel everyday back and forth from work or for your next long trip, don't waste time - check out the audiobooks available for reserve from the public library!  You could learn more about your travel destination or another language while you drive.

- Maps.  The public library has a huge database of maps for about every destination you can think of.  Check those out to plan your next trip.

- Free WiFi.  If you are traveling around Dallas with your laptop and need free WiFi, look no further than your public library.  And they are already built to provide comfortable, quiet places to use WiFi.

Ask a librarian online

And if you just can't find what you are looking for (not because you are dumb but because there is just so much information out there), Ask a Librarian

As always, the number two reason to use the Dallas Public Library other than the enormous about of travel resources they have is...it's always FREE - FREE - FREE.

Make sure your pet has current shots and an up to date record of pet care on an authorized form from your vet for travel.  Be sure to let your vet know where you will be traveling as there can be different shot requirements in each state or country.  If you are unsure of the requirements or availability, always call the airline, hotel or restaurant directly and make note of who you speak with to ensure you and your pet enjoy every moment of your vacation together.
